What BMI means

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using your height and weight to estimate whether you fall into an underweight, normal, overweight, or obese range. It's calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.

The standard ranges are: under 18.5 (underweight), 18.5–24.9 (normal weight), 25–29.9 (overweight), and 30+ (obese).

Limitations to keep in mind

BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes or very muscular people often show as "overweight" despite having low body fat. It also doesn't account for age, sex, or body composition differences. BMI is a useful general screening tool, but it isn't a diagnosis — talk to a doctor for a full picture of your health.
